How it works

Micro suction earwax removal is performed using a microscope and a medical suction device to suck out the wax. A very thin steel fitting is fitted to the end of the suction tube which allows us to gently suck out the earwax from your canal.

The first part of the process is to examine your ear using a microscope and using the low-pressure suction device, safely remove the blockage. If your hearing has felt like it has been diminished, we will perform a hearing screen pre and post removal to ensure the wax was the cause. We will also perform a tamp to check there is no fluid behind your ear drum.

Why Ear Wax Removal

A Good View
We have a great view of both the earwax and the ear canal. It means that we can always see what we are doing. Making it easier for us and safe for you.
Not Messy
No water is used or flushed into the ear canal as happens with ear syringing or ear irrigation. Instead, the procedure is dry which significantly reduces any risk of infection.
Safe
Unlike ear syringing and ear irrigation, it is safe for people who have a perforated eardrum or mastoid cavity, in addition to any foreign object that may be lodged inside the ear canal.

When it's used

Microsuction is recommended for people who shouldn't have water in their ears, such as those with a perforated eardrum, a history of thick ear discharge, or who have had ear surgery.

Aftercare

After the procedure, you should avoid strenuous activity for 1-2 days. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers if you experience any discomfort.

Side effects

Possible side effects include dizziness, discomfort, reduced hearing, infection, or trauma to the ear.

Who needs earwax microsuction?

Microsuction is used for people who should not have water in their ears, especially if they have:
  • Any serious complications from a previous irrigation with water
  • Had a middle ear infection (otitis media) in the last 2 months
  • Had any form of ear surgery, apart from grommets, (if they been in the ear for less than 2 years) and the patient is no longer having ENT (ear, nose and throat) appointments. This does not include people who have had ear correction surgery
  • A hole (perforation) in their ear drum or if there is a history of a mucous (thick) discharge from their ear in the last 2 years
  • A cleft palate (repaired or not)
  • A painful ear infection (acute otitis externa)
